"The Franklin half dollar was introduced in honor of Benjamin Franklin, the renowened printer, author, inventor, and diplomat. Franklin's efforts on behalf of the fledgling United States have earned him a well-deserved reputation as one of the first great American citizen-patriots. U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock designed the coin; his initials appear below Franklin's shoulder. The Liberty Bell design on the reverse was modeled after a sketch by artist John Frederick Lewis. Following Sinnock's death in 1947, his successor, Gilroy Roberts, completed the coin design." - Whitman Publishing
