"In April 1945 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt passed away. The Winged Liberty Head or "Mercury" dime had been in circulation since 1916. To honor Roosevelt's memory Congress decided to place his image on the dime, emblematic of Roosevelt's support for the March of Dimes campaign to raise funds to fight polio. President Roosevelt, the dime, and the search for an end to polio were all combined in the coin that debuted in 1946." - H.E. Harris Co.
