    Description

"The Flying Eagle cent designed by James B. Longacre was adopted from a drawing by Titian Peale that was first used on the pattern silver dollars of 1836. Although listed with the rest of the Flying Eagle strikes, the 1856 cent was not an authorized Mint issue, as the laws governing the new small size coin were not enacted until 1857. All Flying Eagle cents were struck in Philadelphia. The small cent was redesigned in 1859 and shows a charming head of Liberty wearing a feathered headdress. This stylized Indian Head is the work of mint engraver James B. Longacre. The reverse features a wresth of laurel leaves." - Whitman Publishing
