    Description

"In 1883 a new motif, the Liberty Head ( by Charles E. Barber, who had been chief engraver at the Mind since 1880 ), was introduced for the nickel five-cent piece. The obverse featured Miss Liberty facing to the left, with stars surrounding her, and the date below. On the reverse the denomination was simply stated by the Roman numeral V, a tradition following the use of III to designate the value of the nickel three-cent and silver three-cent pieces." - Whitman Publishing
