    Description

America's coinage law of 1873 made no provision for continuing the Liberty Seated silver dollar, leading to a lapse in silver dollar minting between 1874 and 1878. During this time the gold dollar became the nation's unit coin, and a special trade dollar was used for commercial transactions with China and other Asian countries. The Bland - Allison Act of February 28, 1878, authoried the resumption of silver dollar coinage. U.S. Mint engraver George T. Morgan created sketches for the new dollar. His designs were chosen for production, and Morgan dollars were minted every year from 1878 through 1904, and then again in 1921." - Whitman Publishing
