The original design of the Jefferson nickel is a modification of a model by sculptor Felix Schlag. It was chosen in a 1938 open competition and is the only instance of a regular coin design being so selected. The designer's initials FS were added below the bust in 1966. The reverse design depicts Jefferson's beautiful home, Monticello. This coin remained mostly unchanged through 2003." - Whitman Publishing
