The coin commonly referred to as the Mercury dime was designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, who also created the Liberty Walking half dollar. His initials, in the monogram form, appear above and to the right of the date. The bust on the obverse depicts Liberty wearing a winged cap that symbolizes freedom of thought. But due to popular cultural images, many see the design as that of Mercury, the winged messenger of the Greek gods. Thus, despite the common reference to this as the Mercury dime, the more accurate term is the Winged Liberty Head dime." - Whitman Publishing
