"The United States Dollar Coin Act of 1997 required the Treasury Department to replace the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin with one more distinct from the quarter dollar. The new dollar coin design, golden in color, was selected by Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin based on the recommendation of the Dollar Coin Design Advisory Committee. The dollar coin's obverse was designed by Glenna Goodacre. It depicts Sacagawea, a young Shoshone woman. Sacagawea carries her infant son, Jean Baptiste, on her back. She cared for him on her entire 3,000 mile portion of the expedition with Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from 1804 to 1806." - Whitman Publishing
