Born in 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts, Susan B. Anthony grew up in a family of Hicksite Quakers whose members were often proponents of liberal causes during the 19th century. Such atypical surroundings during her youth helped influence and formulate the ideals she was later to champion on behalf of civil rights in America. She is best known for her steadfast commitment to secure voting rights for women, although other inequalities toward women and minoities prevalent at the time were also challenged by her persuasive energies. - Whitman Publishing
