"This beautiful half dollar was first issued in 1916. Desinger Adolph A. Weinman depicted Liberty striding toward a rising sun on the left with a star-spangled cape flowing behind her shoulders. Her right hand is outstretched, and in her left arm, she cradles an olive branch. The motif has a counterpart in earlier French coins and is said by some to have been inspired by The Sower, by Jean Francois Millet ( 1814 - 1875 ) , created in 1850." - Whitman Publishing
