"This type quarter was designed by mint engraver Charles E. Barber, who also designed a silmilar dime and half dollar. His initial "B" appears on the truncation of the neck of Liberty. The new design was originally to be selected from public competitions, but none of the entries was satisfactory and the final design was left to the mint engraver. The mint mark appears on the reverse below the eagle. "O" for New Orleans; "D" for Denver; "S" San Francisco and no letter for Philadelphia." - Whitman Publishing
