Herman A. MacNeil designed the Standing Liberty Quarter; his initial, M, appears above and to the right of the date. The mintmark ( D for Denver, S for San Francisco; no mintmark for Philadelphia ) appears on the obverse, to the left of the date. There was a modification of the obverse design in 1917, to cover Liberty's exposed breast; the reverse gained a new arrangement of the stars, with the eagle moved higher. In 1925 a depression was made in the pedestal on which Liberty stands and that bears the date. On the earlier issues the dates wore off easily because they were too high and were not protected by other features of he coin." - Whitman Publishing
