"This type of half dollar was designed by Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber, who also designed a similar dime and quarter. His initial "B" appears on the truncation of the neck of Liberty. The new design was originally to be selected from public competition, but none of the entries was satisfactory and the final design was left to the Mint engraver." - Whitman Publishing
