"Sacagawea, the Shoshone Indian who bravely guided Lewis and Clark on their journey through the Northwest Territory, was the first -- and until 2007, the only -- historical figure to be honored on U.S. golden dollars. In December 2005, however, Congress approved the creation of a new dollar coinage, known as Presidential Dollars, and President George W. Bush signed the legislation into law shortly afterward.
