"The Mint Act of February 21, 1857, replaced the old copper large cent with a small-diameter cent designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. His new motif used a flying eagle combined with an agricultural wreath. Flying Eagle cents were produced for circulation only in 1857 and 1858.
